A key Liverpool star who has almost been forgotten about is now nearing a return from injury and he could save the season.

Injuries have undoubtedly played a role in Liverpool's success so far in this campaign. There have been other factors but to deny injuries haven't played a role would be a lie.

The Reds have been wracked by them, not necessarily by volume but more so by devastating long-term injuries to key stars.

Arne Slot can lament a number of blows that have hampered his ability to put out his best line-up. Especially in the forward line.

Ultimately, it could even decide the fate of the entire campaign for the Reds.

Key absences have resulted in Liverpool being in a tough fight much further down the table than they would have expected to be.

There is a strong chance that the Reds could miss out on Champions League football next season. Given how badly English sides have performed in the Champions League knock-out rounds so far, they could easily lose their fifth place being worthy of qualification to the competition.

But even without that, Liverpool are up against it, currently sitting in sixth and not looking like genuine contenders for fifth and fourth.

After the big summer spend that was almost £450m, this is extremely disappointing. That's why a lot of Liverpool fans are desperate for Arne Slot to leave the club.

However, in his defence, a lot of people seem to forget he has been without the most expensive signing for almost the entire season.

It's been forgotten about by a lot of people that Alexander Isak is a Liverpool player. But he is.

He's just not been able to play for much of the campaign. He arrived unfit due to the summer chaos that unfolded and then it took him time to get to grips with the new team and get himself back into shape.

By the time he did, he broke his leg and he's been out for months now, working in the shadows of the AXA training centre to continue his recovery.

Fortunately, Liverpool's forgotten star is now close to a return. According to The Times, Isak is now nearing the end of his rehabilitation and could return to action after the March international break.

What a boost that could be to Liverpool's final push towards Champions League qualification. Having Isak back could save the Reds their entire season.

People forget just how good he is. Liverpool won't want to rush him back too soon of course. He will need time, he absolutely is going to take time.

But towards the end of April and the start of May, when the real tough fixtures begin, if Isak is able to play and make a contribution, even get close to the level he played last season - that might just be enough to clinch fourth or fifth spot, beating Chelsea and Manchester United or even Aston Villa in the race.

That's how important Isak is and that is why the club paid so much money for him.

Thankfully, he's now on his way back and Liverpool's forgotten star will be no more. He can finally become the hero we've all waited for him to become.
