Liverpool are reportedly preparing a January transfer that would be a complete surprise.

Now it's rare but it can happen that the Reds enter the winter window. Liverpool tend to be opportunistic at this point of the season.

They won't rule out making a move but they won't panic buy either. Gone are the days of Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies. Liverpool will only make a move if a target that they would like becomes available, or if they become heavily pursued by a rival.

Over the last few years there's been a couple of examples of this happening.

There was Liverpool's move for Cody Gakpo to beat Manchester United for the race for the Dutch international. Then before that Liverpool made a similar move for Luis Diaz in order to beat Tottenham to his signature.

Both have become classic January transfers for Liverpool. Gakpo and Diaz have also been solid players and have helped the club to a Premier League title.

This January things are looking a little bit different for Liverpool. Whereas Gakpo and Diaz came in during a time when Liverpool were competing for titles, right now whoever comes in will join a squad in transition.

Arne Slot hasn't quite figured out how to get the best out of his 'new' look Liverpool side and one of the factors behind that is probably because not everything Liverpool had planned to do in the summer window were completed.

One of the biggest disappointments was Liverpool's inability to sign Marc Guehi. Despite agreeing a fee and agreeing terms with the England international, Crystal Palace pulled the plug on the deal in the last minute of the window.

Now there have been some suggestions that Liverpool could go into the January transfer window and pursue a move for Guehi. But this would not make sense.

They can sign him on a free transfer in few months time and Guehi will earn a much bigger signing on fee, too.

Nonetheless, it seems like Liverpool are plotting a surprise move for the Crystal Palace defender in January after all.

That is according to Football Insider, who report that Liverpool are going to make a 'strong push' for him in the winter window.

Now whether that move comes to fruition remains to be seen. Guehi only had eyes for Liverpool in the summer, it's no guarantee that he would have the same stance this time around.

Some of England's and Europe's best clubs will be vying for his services. From a financial point of view he stands to gain more money by making a free transfer.

On the other hand, Palace will not want to lose their captain on a free and they would probably rather sell him in January. So, if they accept an offer, Guehi won't have much choice.
