Liverpool have been named in the mix for a world record transfer. The Reds aiming high again.

Liverpool haven’t been shy to make massive transfers when they see the value there. Virgil van Dijk is arguably still the ‘bravest’ they’ve ever made - £75m on a centre-back in 2018.

That was a world record fee for a defender and came at a time when few people outside of Liverpool felt it was sensible. How do you get proper value from Southampton’s best centre-back?

As it turned out, £75m was a bargain. Van Dijk has been the key figure as the Reds won everything since his move. The Dutch defender transformer the team from a semi-competitive squad to one challenging for every top honour.

Van Dijk remained the club’s record signing until 2025, when the club decided to twice break their transfer record on Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak. The jury is still out on those signings but again, Liverpool will pay the money when they see the value.

Now they’re being asked to do it again.

Micky van de Ven's price tag

Talksport claim that Tottenham Hotspur want a world-record fee if they're to sell Micky van de Ven this year. Now, that's 'world-record' for a centre-back - they're not asking for Neymar money here.

Liverpool are named in the report as a club seriously interested in Van de Ven and we do see why. He's a rapid centre-back with a great physical profile who can also operate on the ball.

That's essentially exactly what Liverpool want at the back. However, he's not worth anything like the money Spurs are asking for there.

Van Dijk looked like arguably the best centre-back in England when Liverpool bought him. It turned out he was, of course. Wirtz was the best player in the Bundesliga, while Isak had just finished as second-top scorer in the Premier League.

Van de Ven has no such accolades and it's difficult to see where Spurs are finding that fee from. Liverpool certainly won't pay that kind of money for a player who feels like a bit of a gamble rather than a sure-fire thing.

So while Spurs want that world-record transfer, we're not sure they'll get it. Then again, maybe everyone knows something we don't...
