'Fantastic' Liverpool youngster DESTINED for the elite

Liverpool have a special youngster and the stars know it. He's destined for the very top.

Liverpool took a chance in the summer when they spent £40m on Milos Kerkez. The Reds saw what he did at Bournemouth last season and decided the Hungary international was their successor to Andy Robertson.

But this was certainly a case of risking it. Kerkez is the most expensive full-back in Liverpool's history and one of the priciest ever.

Spending that on a 21-year-old is a risk - even if the signs are positive. Especially as Kerkez is moving from Bournemouth, a club that doesn't really boast the same pressure as Liverpool.

You simply never know how a player will react to making the step up. Especially when they're so young.

Kerkez's start hasn't been perfect, either. He's made some mistakes and struggled to really impact the final third.

Sunday's win over Bournemouth was the low-point. Kerkez was booked in the first half for diving before a couple more errors put him on the brink of a red card.

That prompted Arne Slot to act, bringing on Robertson as a first-half substitute for Kerkez. The Scot shone, too, proving he's far from finished as an elite option for Liverpool.

Milos Kerkez's future

Robertson, then, is best-placed to judge Kerkez and he's adamant that his new teammate will replace him as Liverpool's starting left-back. That's essentially what he said after Sunday's victory.

"He will be the starting left-back for Liverpool in the future and it's up to me to push him this season and help him improve," said Robertson, per the Liverpool Echo.

"He has a fantastic future ahead of him and he just needs to keep working hard and not let [the substitution] affect him, which it won't as he's a confident lad.

"I'll help him as much as I can but I do want to play games and be the starting left-back and I have got to keep pushing to try to produce the levels I know I can do as well."

Kerkez is, as Robertson pointed out in that interview, still a very young player. While he still needs to click with the team, there's no question that he deserves patience to get up to speed.

And that's one of the reasons why it was so important that Robertson stayed this season. He's the safety net for Liverpool, able to step in as Kerkez grows into the role.

He knows full well that the new signing will eventually take over regularly as the star but until then, both Liverpool and Kerkez can lean on Robertson.
