Xabi Alonso CONVINCED Liverpool star will be a phenomenon

Xabi Alonso is convinced that Liverpool have a superstar on their hands, according to reports. The Real Madrid boss is confident.

Xabi Alonso took a team to Anfield for the second season in a row on Tuesday. He hasn't had a good go of it either time.

Last season, he oversaw a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Liverpool. His Bayer Leverkusen team, the reigning Bundesliga champions, couldn't land a punch as Luis Diaz's hat trick stole the show.

Alonso moved to Real Madrid in the summer and while his latest visit wasn't quite as bad, that's really only because of Thibaut Courtois. The Belgian made a string of brilliant saves to keep the score low, with Liverpool eventually running out 1-0 winners.

Arne Slot's team were simply better on the day from front to back. A fantastic performance and arguably their best of 2025.

Alonso will have been impressed, certainly, and reports in Spain suggest he's got absolute belief that one Red will be a phenomenon there.

Alonso's faith in Florian Wirtz

Defensa Central reports that Alonso spoke with Florian Wirtz at Anfield on Tuesday. Wirtz played under Alonso at Leverkusen, of course, and started that 4-0 defeat last season.

He moved to Liverpool for a record-breaking amount back in May, joining with an incredible amount of hype. Wirtz hasn't quite lived up to that hype, however, struggling for goals and assists.

But the German did put in a fantastic display against Madrid. He should have had an assist, too, only for Courtois to keep out Dominik Szoboszlai.

And the DC report claims Alonso has absolute faith in Wirtz becoming an outstanding player for Liverpool. They report this under the guise of a potential move to Real Madrid, of course - though, they admit everyone would need to be very patient for that to ever happen.

But it seems Alonso fully expects things to eventually click for Wirtz. That's certainly how we feel, too.

Wirtz's overall quality is completely apparent and the only problem is how he fits into this team. Though, that's a concern with plenty of players right now after the new additions.

Once Slot figures that out, there's no question that Wirtz will be a key player for Liverpool. He may even be the key player.
