‘He does EVERYTHING’: Commentator in awe of do-it-all Liverpool star
One Liverpool star earned rave reviews on Sunday with a do-it-all performance. Commentators were left in awe.
Hungary suffered absolute heartbreak on Sunday as they lost 3-2 to Ireland at home. It was a game they had control of, too, after Gabriel Varga scored a screamer to put them in front before half-time.
The home side had the advantage from the get-go, knowing they’d secure a Play-off place with a draw. Ireland, on the other hand, needed to win.
Troy Parrott proved to be decisive on the day, twice equalising for Ireland before scoring one of the most dramatic winners you’ll ever see. With that, Ireland move into the Play-off places as they seek their first World Cup appearance since 2002.
But for Hungary, it’s an unbelievable defeat. They were on course to qualify for their first World Cup since 1986 but will instead need to hope they can improve and qualify for the 2030 edition.
There is a sense that this team will improve, though. Especially with a captain who looks to be developing into one of the world’s best players.
Dominik Szoboszlai catches the eye
This has been a great individual season for Dominik Szoboszlai, even if both Liverpool and Hungary have slipped up. But the midfielder has been sensational all over the pitch and appears to have moved up a level.
He's been world-class for Liverpool and arguably even better for Hungary. That was on show in their defeat to Ireland.
Szoboszlai was so all-action that he earned praise from Ireland's commentary team on RTE: “I’d say he washes the jerseys - he does everything for this team”.
And he certainly does. Szoboszlai was unbelievably involved against Ireland, having 119 touches of the ball across the game.
For context, no other player - for either team - managed more than 73. In fact, combine the 2nd and 3rd-most touches for Hungary and you get 125, so just six more than Szoboszlai had on his own.
He just did everything. His four shots were joint-second-most in the game, while he also got an assist. There were five completed dribbles - as many as the 2nd and 3rd-most combined - and that was from just six attempts.
Five created chances - a figure only matched by Milos Kerkez. 14 passes into the final third - no one else managed more than 11. Naturally, Szoboszlai completed the most passes with 69, 19 more than any other player.
We're not even done: Two tackles, five clearances, four recoveries. No one won more ground duels (8) and the only player who did had a 20 per cent lower success rate.
Szoboszlai won all of his aerial duels, too, and completed more dribbles than anyone else (five, from six attempts).
This was as complete a display as you could hope for. A proper captain's performance and one that absolutely deserved to win the game. Despite the defeat, Hungary have a bright future with Szoboszlai leading things - now it's time for Liverpool to secure that future, too.
