Liverpool spent a lot of money in the summer transfer window, and they might spend more on a couple of players in the next few windows as well.

One player who has been a target for the Reds for some time is Morgan Rogers. It was reported that Liverpool wanted to sign him as recently as last month, and the club's interest remains ongoing in the England international.

Rogers to Liverpool makes sense for various reasons. He's homegrown and he's a young Englishman, who is extremely versatile. He can play on the right-wing, the left-wing, in central areas and even drop back to play in midfield.

Quick, with lots of energy, he made over 30 goal contributions for Aston Villa in all competitions last season.

With Liverpool having agreed a relatively 'cheap' sum for Harvey Elliott with Aston Villa, his loan deal will become a permanent one for just £35m when he plays 10 games for his new club, there is definitely a good rapport being built up with the Midlands club.

Perhaps that could be because Liverpool are eyeing up a move for Rogers. One thing is clear, the Reds are definitely closer to getting him after the latest updates coming out of Aston Villa.

Rogers' side has had a frustrating transfer window due to financial constraints. Villa breached UEFA's financial rules and were at a risk of breaching the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) as well.

This meant they were limited to how much they could spend and it's why they were ultimately unable to sign Marcus Rashford, despite the Manchester United academy graduate being keen on a return to the club.

In the end, Villa made a couple of moves on the final day, most of these being loan deals in order to save themselves from having to suffer further penalties.

However, their financial plight is set to continue.

Why Liverpool are now closing in on signing Rogers

According to The Atheltic Aston Villa are still set to breach UEFA's Squad Cost Rules for the second time in a row. The side already have a settlement agreement for not just breaching the above rule but the Football Earnings Rule as well.

This therefore highlights the difficult situation they are in.

Villa are currently very much handcuffed in their ability to sign players and consistently keep up to date with the financial regulations imposed on them by UEFA and the Premier League.

There is therefore only one solution.

A big sale could help Villa massively. This is why they were keen on Emiliano Martinez to join Manchester United, which ultimately fell through in the summer.

The obvious sale in Villa's squad right now is Rogers, though. He's by far and away their biggest asset and someone who could go for a huge transfer fee.

It's something that Villa are going to have to do at some point in the next nine months or so. Whether that will be in January or in the summer, given their financial situation selling Rogers looks inevitable.

And if his sale is inevitable then Liverpool are definitely closing in on getting their desired target. The Reds have already put this deal in motion with Elliott's sale so we expect them to return for Rogers in the the near future.

He's the perfect replacement for the departed England U21 international.
