Liverpool at risk of devastating £50 million loss
Liverpool’s season has not gone to plan, for many they were the favourites to win the Premier League.
By Christmas the Reds chances of retaining their league title had all but disappeared, and now Arne Slot’s side are embroiled in a battle to finish in the top four.
Chelsea sit two points ahead of the Reds, whilst Manchester United are one point better off in fourth place.
Securing Champions League qualification is always a key milestone for a club the size of Liverpool, with the club only missing out twice in the last 10 seasons.
Arne Slot is aware of how important qualifying for Europe’s premier competition is, and the repercussions of missing out could be severe.
Liverpool facing £50 million disaster
Missing out on the Champions League has several consequences, including players being less willing to agree to transfers, but the biggest loss is financial.
According to UEFA’s financial figures from the 2024/25 season, Liverpool were paid €98.1 million (~£85m) for topping the league phase table and reaching the round of 16.
In comparison, Tottenham received €41.4 million (~£36m) for winning the Europa League.
If the season were to end today, Liverpool would only qualify for the Europa League.
That means that even if the Reds won the Europa League, they would still be set to make a near £50 million loss based on last season’s figures.
Slot’s side have qualified for the round of 16 again, meaning they will likely receive a similar payout to last season, but not qualifying for the competition again this campaign could set the club back for years.
The club are currently in a period of transition, with more high-profile signings expected in the coming transfer windows, but a season in the Europa League would set them back significantly.
Last time the club were in the competition they reached the quarter-finals, the highest earning side who went out at that stage last season were Lazio, who received €24.2 million (~£21m).
The latest release of financial figures from UEFA will confirm to Liverpool that qualifying for the Champions League is a must, and the club’s rebuild could hang in the balance.
