Ibrahima Konate free to leave as ideal replacement identified
A defensive rebuild is underway at Anfield and Liverpool’s summer plans are becoming clear.
Giovanni Leoni arrived on Merseyside last summer alongside Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez, marking the start of the evolution of the Reds’ backline.
A deal that will bring Jeremy Jacquet to Anfield in the summer was announced last month too but Liverpool are still planning defensive additions.
Ibrahima Konate is into the final months of his current deal, and the Frenchman’s future is increasingly uncertain.
Talks are ongoing to keep the 26-year-old at the club, but progress has been slow and time is running out to keep the defender at Anfield.

Liverpool moving on from Ibrahima Konate
There will be plenty of interest in Konate should he leave Liverpool for free in the summer, and according to reports from Spain the Reds have identified a potential replacement.
According to Fichajes, Atletico Madrid defender Marc Pubill has caught the eye of the Reds’ recruitment team and has been earmarked as the perfect replacement for Konate.
Pubill, who has mostly played as a right-back in his career, has stepped up in the centre of Atletico’s defence this season.
The 22-year-old Spaniard has been especially impressive in the air, and is proving himself as one of Europe’s top prospects.
Do Liverpool need to sign another defender this summer?
Links to defenders like Pubill will come as no surprise, the Reds have made an effort to bring in some of the world’s most promising young players in recent years.
Konate isn’t the only defender that could leave this summer either, with Robertson also into the final few months of his deal and Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez approaching the final 12 months of their contracts.
Jacquet’s arrival must of course be considered, but it seems incredibly likely Liverpool are going to need to add more depth to their backline even with the addition of the Frenchman.
If Konate does leave on a free, then picking up a player with Pubill’s quality could be exactly what Liverpool need this summer.
