Former team mate jumps to Mo Salah's defence as Egyptian's attitude questioned
Mohamed Salah is undoubtedly one of Liverpool’s greatest ever players, but the last month has been an uncertain one for the Egyptian.
After a stunning season that helped Liverpool to the Premier League title, expectations for Salah were high going into the season.
Much to the disappointment of the Anfield faithful, the Reds have not performed on the same level they showed last season and therefore the team have been subject to some intense scrutiny.
A run of bad form led to Salah being dropped to the bench for a number of games and a very public fallout between the forward and the hierarchy at Anfield followed.
Now, even whilst at AFCON, Salah continues to be in the firing line for criticism, but one of his former Egypt teammates has come out in his defence.
Egypt teammate defends Mo Salah
Writing for The Athletic, Simon Hughes relayed his experience of Salah with the Egyptian national team, painting a picture of the forward getting special treatment whilst on international duty.
“Mohamed Salah largely gets what he wants with Egypt, speaks when he likes, the world rotates around him and everyone accepts it.” Hughes stated.
“It probably feeds into why he thinks he can occasionally stamp his feet at Liverpool.”
These observations come just a couple of weeks after Salah told the media he felt like he had been thrown under the bus by the club.
In response to Hughes’ post on X sharing his article, Sam Morsey jumped to Salah’s defence.
Morsy, who has been capped nine times by Egypt, said: “I’ve been in many camps with Salah over the years under different managers this has actually never happened. Disgraceful article.”Â
The majority of people will never know what goes on behind closed doors at football clubs like Liverpool, but it is generally understood that Salah is a well-liked member of Liverpool’s squad. Â
Salah’s future at Liverpool remains uncertain. A January transfer looks unlikely but isn’t completely off of the cards.Â
Regardless of who is right in this situation, for many supporters seeing the unrest surround Salah continue whilst the 33-year-old is at AFCON will be a negative, and almost everyone will be hopeful his situation is resolved soon.Â
