Former Liverpool forward edging closer to replace Arne Slot
A former Liverpool forward is seriously edging closer to replacing Arne Slot if he keeps going the way he is.
No matter what the club's official channels brief, and how many roundtables the Dutchman does, his time at Anfield will be coming to an end.
Sooner or later, Slot will depart. He is simply not the right fit to manage Liverpool.
The last calendar year and more has proved that. Despite the excuses Slot makes, the Reds should be playing much better football and should be in a much better position.
Slot doesn't know how to handle the opposition's antidotes to his tactics. He comes across as someone not necessarily excellent in his man-management and on top of that he doesn't seem to inspire his players either.
Simply, put he's not fit to be a Liverpool manager. Liverpool need a change and there is one candidate everyone is already overlooking.
There are a lot of former Liverpool players doing well managing at a high level in Europe these days. You only need to look at Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa.
But there's another name worth keeping an eye on in Robbie Keane.
The former Liverpool forward only spent six months or so at Anfield and didn't seem to get along with Rafa Benitez all that much but he was a formidable forward in the Premier League at all the other clubs he played for.
Even at Liverpool, Keane had his moments. His belter against Arsenal will live long in the memory.
Anyway, he's now gone onto have a successful managerial career. Currently Keane is on course to win back-to-back league titles with Ferencvaros.
But not only that Keane has led the club to the round of 16 in the Europa League and could be on course for a historic triumph.
On Thursday afternoon, Keane's Ferencvaros beat Braga 2-0 in the first leg of their Europa League round of 16 tie.
Next week, Keane has the opportunity to lead the side to the quarter-finals - something that hasn't been seen in Hungary in decades.
If Ferencvaros go through to the quarter finals, they will face either Panathinaikos or Real Betis, both of them are teams Ferencvaros could beat, the former they've already beaten this season.
And if Keane gets them to the semi-final of the Europa League, what is there to stop him from winning it all?
If he does, surely he would become a contender for the Liverpool job to replace Slot.
Keane has set-up a system that works for Ferencvaros. More importantly, he's continuing to give young players a chance which is another area where Slot has fallen short.
The Irishman is a brilliant man-manager who has had to balance a very large squad and keep everyone satisfied.
He's a motivator, and if he wins the Europa League, there is every chance he could become the perfect candidate for Liverpool.
Beating Braga was a huge step, which is why he's now edging closer and closer to replacing the Dutchman.
