Fabrizio Romano CONFIRMS talks for defender ahead of transfer deadline
Despite spending over £400 million in the summer, Liverpool’s squad looks remarkably thin in a number of key areas.
The reigning Premier League champions have struggled to rediscover their title-winning form this campaign, and injuries have had quite a severe impact.
Alexander Isak, Conor Bradley and Giovanni Lenoi have all likely played their last game for the Reds this season already, and several other players are facing a number of weeks on the sideline.
With the end of the January transfer window fast approaching, Richard Hughes will be assessing all the options available to him and Liverpool have now received a positive update on one of their priority targets.
Fabrizio Romano confirms Liverpool transfer talks
One of the most pressing positions the Reds need to address in the transfer market, either this winter or at the end of the season, is the centre of their defence.
Ibrahima Konate is into the last six months of his deal and there’s plenty of talk over the futures of both Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk.
One of the most spoken about names linked with an Anfield switch is Rennes’ Jeremy Jacquet, and Fabrizio Romano has now offered an update on Liverpool's pursuit of the Frenchman.
The transfer insider revealed that the battle for Jacquet is still open, with Liverpool ‘in talks with Rennes and player’s camp for the defender’.
Chelsea are also still firmly in the race for the 20-year-old, and are still in talks with both the club and player.
Will Jacquet end up at Liverpool?
With Gomez and Leoni currently injured, Liverpool are left with just two senior central defenders and it would make sense to add to their backline before the 2 February deadline.
According to Romano though, any deal for Jacquet will be for the summer of 2026, with Rennes unwilling to let their top prospect go mid-season.
The Reds’ need for defensive reinforcements stretches beyond their current injuries, so Jacquet will still be on the radar once the season is over.
A battle with Chelsea for the young defender looks set to stretch on into the closing stages of the season, but Liverpool will be determined to beat their domestic rivals to the signing of one of Europe’s most exciting defenders.
