Door OPEN for Liverpool to re-sign special academy graduate for free
Liverpool can now re-sign a former academy graduate on a free contract.
In the history of Liverpool, it's not happened very often that the club has re-signed a player.
Ian Rush has probably been the most famous example after the Reds brought him back from his time at Juventus.
He went onto become the most prolific goalscorer in the club's history.
Steve Staunton is another player who was re-signed after he left the club in 1991. He returned seven years later and spent two more seasons at Anfield.
More recently, Robbie Fowler made a return from Manchester City under Rafa Benitez and Craig Bellamy came back on a free transfer after spending the previous season at Cardiff City in the Premier League.
But now there could be another name to add to the list.
Liverpool are needing to add more players of homegrown status to fill their squad. Right now, they have fulfilled their entire non-homegrown quota of 17 players, but there's still room to grow in the homegrown area.
So, what better way to do that than to re-sign former academy players who showed special talent but for one reason or another just never quite made it at the club, only to go on and excel elsewhere.
One such option is Harry Wilson, who has been in incredible form recently.
Wilson has 14 goal contributions in his last 14 matches for club and country, scoring nine times and registering five assists.
During that time Wilson has scored against Liverpool and made an impact against some of the bigger teams in the Premier League.
Some of the goals he scored were truly incredible and he is now finally seem to be showing the special talent it was obvious he would become while playing for the club's academy.
Wilson was an incredible player for Liverpool's U18 and U21 sides. He dominated at that level and showcased his talent on numerous loan spells.
Ultimately, he only earned a few first-team matches because he was competing against Mo Salah in his position.
But now he is a more mature player and he is ready for a challenge and good enough for a club like Liverpool.
At the end of the season he is expected to be a free agent. His current deal expires on the 30th June, at which point Liverpool could sign him on a free deal.
He's not yet signed an extension with Fulham so the door is there for Liverpool to capitalise.
Given his quality and the fact that he is a former Liverpool academy product, this would just make a lot of sense. Especially because Liverpool need more depth in attack and Wilson can cover a number of positions.
