‘I have to’: Dominik Szoboszlai raves about teammate’s ‘best’ performance yet - but with an apology

Dominik Szoboszlai has raved about one of his Liverpool teammates after they gave their 'best' performance for the club against Real Madrid. But it came with an apology.

Liverpool beat Real Madrid 1-0 at Anfield on Tuesday evening in arguably their finest performance of the season so far. The Reds controlled the game wonderfully, limiting what the visitors could do while creating several top chances.

In fact, it would have been a far bigger victory if not for a string of brilliant saves from Thibaut Courtois. This was Liverpool at their very best.

A lot of that was down to Arne Slot, who produced a masterclass to put his team on top. Defensively, this was about as solid as you could expect against a rampant Real Madrid - a team boasting some of the finest attacking players on the planet.

But while Slot's system deserves an awful lot of credit, it wasn't the only reason. There were some magnificent individual performances, with the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister and Conor Bradley really standing out.

They weren't the only ones, however. As Szoboszlai himself pointed out after the match.

Dominik Szoboszlai hails Florian Wirtz

Szoboszlai talked to CBS Sports after the match where he was quick to point out that Florian Wirtz excelled for Liverpool. The German has come under fire for a somewhat sub-par start to life at Anfield but he was brilliant against Real Madrid.

"I have to mention Flo," Szoboszlai told Jamie Carragher. "He just kept on running, winning the ball, running back, having his chances.

"Giving me almost an assist - so sorry from me as well."

Carragher agreed, saying "that was definitely Wirtz's best performance [for Liverpool]".

And Wirtz really should have had an assist. He created five chances in the match - more than any other player - and his cross for Szoboszlai put it on a plate.

Of course, Courtois has a habit of keeping Liverpool out and he raced to the ball, blocking the Hungary captain's effort up close. But it still only feels like a matter of time before Wirtz is getting the 'key' numbers in Red.

He's moving about the pitch well and looks more comfortable with his touch. Honestly, once things click together, it looks like Wirtz will become an absolute force for Liverpool.

Tuesday was a great step in that direction.
