A £55m deal has been struck and it could ultimately land a major signing in Liverpool. Here's how it could go down.

Newcastle United are signing Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest. Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that, saying there’s a £55m agreement between the clubs and an agreement on the player’s side, too.

It’s one that was expected to push forward. Newcastle have had Elanga on their list all summer but saw a £45m rejected not too long ago.

They’ve upped their offer - something we imagine they weren’t thrilled about - and it’s now got the deal over the line. This is an important one, too.

Not just for Newcastle, who boost their squad with an impressive player, but for it firing the starting pistol on their summer transfer window. It could now see other deals move forward - and that’s huge for Liverpool.

Liverpool want Newcastle players

The big one here is Alexander Isak. Liverpool want to sign the Swede and have done all year. Newcastle have been reluctant to even negotiate, however.

But this could change things. They're spending a large amount on Elanga and it's going to push them up against PSR.

If they want to make more major deals happen, they'll almost certainly need to sell and now is the moment to find out if that means selling Isak. They'll want to do so at the earliest opportunity, after all, as they'll need time to actually spend the money.

There are other ways this could go, though. Liverpool also like Anthony Gordon, who while also costing a fortune, wouldn't be as big a blow to the Magpies as losing Isak.

That one's particularly interesting as talk grows that Luis Diaz wants to leave Liverpool. Gordon would be a dream replacement - a player the Reds have tracked for a long time and who ticks the homegrown boxes.

Newcastle are now setting their plans in stone with the Elanga deal. If a major sale is a part of those plans, we'll find out shortly.

Certainly, Liverpool hope to take advantage.

Rest in peace, Diogo Jota.

Was Alex Caple dropped on his head or something? Newcastle aren't selling Isak. They bought Elanga to play with him, not instead of him. As for PSR, Newcastle have waited three windows to sign anyone and have CL football. They can spend a good amount this summer.
