Arne Slot's Liverpool future to be decided in the next two weeks
Arne Slot’s future at Liverpool has been thrown into serious doubt this season.
An excellent maiden campaign saw the Dutchman deliver the Reds’ 20th league title and led to talks of a new long-term contract, but those plans have since been shelved.
The Premier League champions have failed spectacularly to maintain their dominance domestically, finding themselves 21 points behind league leaders Arsenal despite finishing 10 points clear of them in 2024/25.
Several factors have impacted Liverpool’s drop off this year, including some outside of the club’s control like injuries and the tragic passing of Diogo Jota last summer.
Nevertheless, Slot has found himself under immense pressure, and his future could well be decided in the next two weeks.
Are Liverpool on the brink of Slot decision?
Despite a very poor showing in the league this season, with the Reds currently five points outside the top four, Liverpool do still have the chance to win two trophies in the coming months.
Slot’s side will face Manchester City on Saturday in the quarter-final of the FA Cup. Just four days later they will play the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final against PSG.
Six days later Liverpool will know whether they are progressing to the semi-finals of the European Cup for the first time since 2022, and in the meantime they have a tough clash against Fulham in the Premier League to face.
Multiple reports have suggested that the club will wait until the end of the season to assess Slot's job, but a poor run of form across the next four games could see his future decided early.
If the Reds were to crash out of both cups and lose to Fulham, a result that could see them drop to seventh in the league depending on other results, Slot’s position in the Anfield dugout may become untenable.
A number of rival Premier League teams have already made the decision to axe their managers and take a fresh approach in order to finish the season strongly, and approach that has worked incredibly well for Manchester United.
If all hope is lost of a trophy and Liverpool find themselves up against the odds in a battle for Champions League qualification, a change of head coach could be the spark that is needed to get the Reds over the line.
