Arne Slot on the brink as position days from being untenable

Arne Slot's position is just days away from being untenable at Liverpool. This really could be it.

Liverpool struggled to a 1-1 draw at home with Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. It was arguably the clearest sign yet that this is a poor team - one that looks like a fair match for the most out-of-form team going.

But that’s part of the problem for Liverpool. Their matches against the best teams around look remarkably similar to their matches against the worst teams.

They lack any control over matches, with results simply going with whatever way the wind is blowing. And that’s a situation that could seriously harm Arne Slot.

The Dutchman is under extraordinary pressure right now. That’s pressure that may create an untenable situation later this week.

It's ridiculous but winning the UEFA Champions League is essentially the only thing that turns this Liverpool campaign into a positive one. Arguably winning the FA Cup and qualifying for next year's Champions League would do the same.

But would Slot actually make it that far if Liverpool are knocked out of Europe by Galatasaray this week? Because that's a real possibility.

The Reds host them at Anfield 1-0 down from the away fixture. A draw or defeat knocks Liverpool out and we've already seen this season how possible that is.

Galatasaray, after all, are a better side than Nottingham Forest or PSV Eindhoven - two clubs who managed to win by three goals at Liverpool's home. Failure this week, on the back of the Spurs draw, would almost certainly crank the pressure too high for Slot.

Many turned on him this Sunday, failing to see a way back. That number will grow enormously with another failure. It would eliminate his best way of getting people back on side, as well as reinforce the belief that this isn't turning around.

It's a massive game.
