Liverpool have failed to live up to expectations this season and Arne Slot has faced very heavy criticism.

After winning the Premier League in his maiden campaign at Anfield, Slot’s job has looked at real risks at times in the past six months.

Between September and December 2025, the Reds went on one of the worst runs in the club’s history – losing nine of 12 matches, including four Premier League defeats in a row.

A 4-1 Champions League home defeat to PSV was the true low point for Liverpool, but Slot remained in charge and now looks more secure in his role.

The Dutchman’s job isn’t guaranteed however, and an update has been given on exactly what he must do to remain at Anfield.

Arne Slot’s future is still at risk

Liverpool find themselves in a battle to finish in the Premier League’s top four, and their finishing position could be crucial to Slot’s future according to TEAMtalk.

According to the report the Dutchman must secure Champions League qualification to remain in the Anfield dugout, with a performance review pending at the end of the season.

Liverpool can achieve qualification either by winning this season’s Champions League, a feat that would almost certainly see Slot continue, or by finishing in the league’s top four.

Winning the cup looks an even harder task after the Reds' 1-0 defeat to Galatasaray on Tuesday night, however.

It is also possible that a fifth Champions League place will go to the league if English teams perform well enough in the competition, leading to a high European coefficient for the Premier League.

What if Liverpool don’t qualify for the Champions League?

If the hierarchy decide to move on from Slot at the end of the season, Xabi Alonso is the favourite to take over.

TEAMtalk claim that he is the only candidate to replace Slot, and his availability since leaving Real Madrid has undoubtedly added more pressure to the Dutchman’s situation.

Despite recent reports stating the contrary, there isn’t believed to be an agreement in place for Alonso to take over ahead of next season, but speculation continues to mount as Liverpool stutter.

A league defeat to bottom of the league Wolves has left the champions in a disadvantaged position, but Slot still has plenty of time to turn things around and secure his Anfield future.
