40-goal forward sensation joins Liverpool
Just when it seemed Liverpool’s season couldn’t unravel any further, another major setback came earlier this month.
Hugo Ekitike suffered a serious Achilles rupture during the Reds' clash with Paris Saint-Germain. The injury is expected to rule him out for the rest of the current season, as well as the upcoming World Cup and a large part of the next campaign.
Early estimates place his recovery timeline at around nine months, making it a significant blow for both the player and the club.
Among Liverpool’s recent signings, Ekitike had been the quickest to settle. He delivered 23 goal contributions in his debut season, an impressive tally, especially given the team’s inconsistent form overall.
In a short space of time, he established himself as one of the club’s key figures and became a firm favourite among supporters.
Now, Liverpool are faced with the challenge of adapting without him. Arne Slot will be deprived of one of his most effective attacking options for the foreseeable future.
Attention will inevitably turn to the rest of the squad, as the team looks for someone capable of stepping up and filling the considerable void left behind.
Liverpool’s attacking depth is looking worryingly thin. Outside of Alexander Isak, there are few dependable options available.
Changes are also looming. Federico Chiesa is expected to move on this summer, while Mohamed Salah could be heading for the exit as well. Meanwhile, Jayden Danns remains a doubt due to ongoing injury problems, making it difficult for the club to rely on him over a sustained period.
Given that situation, Liverpool seemed to have turned elsewhere, towards an 18-year-old forward who is the latest sensation catching the eye in the academy - Will Wright.
The youngster wasn’t short on experience even before his move at senior level, having already featured for Salford City. Remarkably, he achieved that while still only 16 making his debut in the FA Cup last season at that age, incidentally the only other 16-year-old to play in the FA Cup's third round last season was Rio Ngumoha.
At academy level Wright has dominated as well, he scored over 40 goals for Salford's youth sides and really caught the attention of Europe's elite.
Arsenal wanted to sign him, but Wright chose Liverpool.
Wright adapted quickly after arriving, too. He was handed a first-team opportunity in a pre-season clash against Athletic Bilbao on the day his transfer was confirmed and very nearly marked his debut with a goal.
That was a glimpse of what he could offer.
Since returning from an injury he picked up in September, his numbers have been strong, he’s averaging a goal contribution every 94 minutes in Premier League 2 and has nine goal contributions in nine starts.
But beyond the stats, it’s his intensity that really stands out. His constant pressing, energy, and willingness to chase every ball have made a big impact in helping Liverpool's U21 team be competitive.
The way Wright battles for loose balls and helps drive the U21 side forward has shades of the way Nunez led the press for Liverpool and caused pure chaos - it's also something Liverpool are missing at the moment.
Last week Wright scored yet another brace for Liverpool's U21 side in a friendly and this week he's now training with the first-team.
Wright joined Liverpool's senior side for a training session ahead of the Reds' clash against Crystal Palace at the weekend.
Given Liverpool's lack of depth, Wright has a chance to be on the bench for that game.
With Ekitike sidelined, and Isak still not fully fit, this is his opportunity to make a mark.
He’s certainly one to watch closely because he has all the ability in the world to make the step-up.
