Jurgen Klopp reacts to Community Shield defeat
Liverpool lost 5-4 on penalties to Arsenal in the Community Shield on the weekend.
Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored the first goal of the game at Wembley. Reds forward Takumi Minamino scored Liverpool’s equaliser.
However, the Reds were beaten on penalties come the end.
Klopp said the following regarding the match, as quoted by the club’s official website: “We were here to win the game, I hope that was obvious.
“We didn’t win the game – we didn’t lose it, but we lost the competition obviously because of a penalty shootout.
“And because we conceded a goal from Aubameyang and didn’t use our chances, then the game is open.
“We scored late, which was not a problem but we could have scored earlier, that would have helped.
“We had the game in the right direction then, I would say, but time was not enough.”
Injury updates on Jordan Henderson and Joel Matip
Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is hopeful that Jordan Henderson and Joel Matip will return to first-team training next week.
Henderson and Matip have been out of action because of respective knee and foot injuries.
Klopp told the club’s official website: “I think Joel and Hendo will be in parts of team training next week and we will see. Of course, the longer they have the better the chance is [of playing against Leeds United on the 12th of September], but I don’t know in this moment.”
Neco Williams gets first senior Wales call-up
Liverpool right back Neco Williams received his first call-up to the senior Wales squad this week. He has been included in the 26-man squad for their upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures against Finland and Bulgaria.
This comes as no surprise after the 19-year-old broke into the Liverpool first-team this season, securing his place as the Red’s second-choice right-back behind Trent Alexander Arnold.
Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander Arnold included in England squad
In news that is not at all surprising, Liverpool defenders Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold were named in the England squad this week.
The pair will join Gareth Southgate’s squad for Nations League clashes with Iceland and Denmark.
The Iceland game will take place in Reykjavik on Saturday the 5th of September and the Denmark game will take place in Copenhagen on Tuesday the 8th.
