Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk took to Twitter to answer some football-related questions sent in by the public.

One of the questions sent in asked Van Dijk to name a centre-back from any era in football that he would most like to play with.

Van Dijk’s answer gives an insight into how highly he rates his current centre-back partner at Liverpool.

Gomez, who arrived at Liverpool from Charlton Athletic for a transfer fee of £3.5 million back in 2015, has been exceptional for the Reds this season.

I think everyone associated with Liverpool knew Gomez was going to be a good player. When he made his debut in 2015 under Brendan Rodgers, he was arguably one of Liverpool’s better players at the time, despite the fact he was still a kid.

He started off at left-back under Rodgers, but he was always going to become a centre-back under Jurgen Klopp.

There have been times over the past two seasons where he has outperformed Van Dijk, which shows you how good Gomez can be on his day. I expect the 22-year-old to only get better.
