Reds midfielder Curtis Jones was selected to start for Liverpool against Lincoln City in the Carabao Cup last night.

Jones repaid the faith shown by the coaching staff, as he put in a Man of the Match performance at Sincil Bank.

The midfielder was absolutely superb. Jones scored two goals in Liverpool’s 7-2 victory over Lincoln City.

Jones told the club’s official website: “I’m happy [with my two goals] but more importantly the boys got the win and we go through to the next round.”

Jones is spot on. It is important that Liverpool secured a victory against Lincoln City, and we will explain why. Liverpool need to make progress in the Carabao Cup and FA Cup this season.

Winning matches in those competitions gives minutes to more players across the squad.

The likes of Divock Origi, Takumi Minamino, Xherdan Shaqiri, Kostas Tsimikas and Jones have not started in either of Liverpool’s two opening Premier League fixtures this season.

However, they all started last night, which is why it is important that Liverpool are involved in the cup competitions
