Former Southampton striker Charlie Austin has revealed that Virgil van Dijk once told him about a failed transfer to Manchester United.
Austin claims that van Dijk told him Manchester United were interested in signing him from Southampton before eventually deciding to sign Victor Lindelof from Benfica instead. The pair were sat on the bench for Southampton when Austin quizzed the defender on a potential exit from the south coast club.
He then goes on to say that van Dijk had his heart set on a move to Liverpool and was not sure whether or not he would have accepted a move to United at the time.
The Dutch centre-back eventually made the £76m move to Liverpool in January 2018 from Southampton, with Austin revealing that van Dijk was made to train with the under-23’s the summer before the transfer.
TalkSport shared the clip on Twitter, with Austin speaking about van Dijk’s situation at Southampton before his move to Liverpool.
🤷♂️ “At #SaintsFC I said to Virgil that surely Man Utd had to be in for him.”
😲 “Virgil told me it was between him & Victor Lindelof…”
🔴 “I’m not sure [if he wanted Utd move], his heart was set on #LFC.”
