Virgil van Dijk has revealed that he “told off” Alisson Becker following the keeper’s mistake against Manchester United on Sunday.

Alisson spilled the ball following a cross from Romelu Lukaku, allowing Jesse Lingard to stab the ball home and equalise against the run of play. However, the United goal proved irrelevant in the end as Xherdan Shaqiri came off the substitute bench to score a brace and send Liverpool top of the league again.

And Van Dijk, who always strives for perfection in the Reds defence, saw the funny side of Alisson’s error after the game.

“I said to him, ‘We have no clean sheet because of you! Why did you ruin the clean sheet?’” Van Dijk told

“I made a joke out of it. He’s been fantastic for us. It happens, everyone makes mistakes.

“You see it a lot… maybe I didn’t react as well as maybe I could have. It happens sometimes. We had to all bounce back and we did.

“It was very important to win. You could say it was just another game but it was a bit special because it was against them.

“It had been a long time since we beat them at home and it was well deserved.”

Liverpool next take on Wolves away on Friday night as they aim to maintain their unbeaten Premier League record this season.
