Football analytics site Transfermarkt has claimed that Liverpool signed midfielder Thiago Alcantara for less than half of his market value this summer.
The website has estimated that Thiago’s true value is £43.20m and he is the ninth most expensive Liverpool player on the list. Mo Salah and Sadio Mane are currently sharing the top spot with a value of £108m each, with Trent Alexander-Arnold just behind them on £99m.
Liverpool signed Thiago from Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich for a reported fee of £20m – less than half of his £43.20m valuation. Although, the deal could rise to £25m with add-ons and take it over 50% of his market value.
ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT
This shows that Liverpool were able to get a bargain when they brought Thiago to the club last month. The Spanish international is a proven top tier player and Michael Edwards managing to negotiate a deal to sign him for just £20m looks to be exceptional business on paper.
Thiago has proven himself in Spain and Germany, winning the Champions League with both Barcelona and Bayern Munich. He has played over 200 times in the Bundesliga and La Liga, along with over 50 appearances in the Champions League, proving that he has had the consistency throughout his career to play at the highest level.
So, Liverpool signing him for less than half of his market value is superb work from the club and will hopefully be looked back on as a sensational signing in years to come. Thiago now needs to start showing his quality on the pitch to make the £20m look like the bargain it promises to be.
