Former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane has given his verdict on what Jurgen Klopp’s side need to do to be considered a “really good” team.
Keane has stated that he is not anti-Liverpool. The former Manchester United player believes that Klopp’s side ultimately need to win more trophies over the next five to ten years to be considered a “really good” team.
“I’m certainly not anti-Liverpool. When I was growing up in the ’80s, Liverpool were obviously a brilliant team and I had a lot of respect for players like Ronnie Whelan and Ray Houghton. I take my hat off to [that] Liverpool. They were a very, very good team. They were constantly winning League titles,” Keane told the Irish Independent.
“People will always connect me with United, but I would never begrudge a team winning the league. They deserve it. They have been outstanding over the last couple of seasons. The sign of any good team is to be consistent, and that’s what they’ve been.
“So, to win the title is amazing, a fantastic achievement, but the important thing for any big club is to kick on. How many titles can they win over the next five, ten years? That’s how I judge the really good teams.
“It’s the same with players. I’ve seen players have one or two good seasons and they get a bit giddy, a bit excited. And before you know it, you don’t hear of them any more.”
ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT
I completely agree with Keane. When I think about Liverpool’s great teams of the past, I always refer back to the 1970’s and 1980’s. That is because those Liverpool sides won multiple major trophies. They did not settle for one.
I am hoping that Klopp’s side can add to the 2019 Champions League trophy. Liverpool only need five more points to secure the 2019-20 Premier League title, which means that they should be able to add that trophy to the collection.
Klopp has developed a special side, which can be backed up by the aforementioned achievements.
However, I want them to be remembered as one of the best teams to grace the English game. In order to do that, they will need to continue winning more trophies in my opinion.
Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville believes (3:20) that to be considered a great side, you have to win a Champions League and a couple of league titles. Perhaps that is what Liverpool should be aiming to do under Klopp.
