Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has revealed that he has “butterflies” thinking about Thiago Alcantara’s move to the club from Bayern Munich.
Gerrard, when asked about the possibility of Thiago and Gareth Bale coming to the Premier League this week, said that he is only interested in Liverpool, rather than Tottenham.
Bale is reportedly set to join Tottenham on loan from Real Madrid, whilst Liverpool confirmed the arrival of Thiago from Bayern Munich on Friday. The Spaniard has signed a four-year deal with Liverpool, having spent his career at Barcelona and Bayern previously.
Speaking in his press conference for Rangers, as transcribed by the Liverpool Echo, Gerrard showcased his excitement for Thiago. “I think it’s a fantastic coup for Tottenham, you’re talking about a world-class individual but, to be honest with you, I’m more excited about Thiago.
“He’s the one that has got me with butterflies in my stomach.
“My focus down there is Liverpool, not Tottenham, but it’s a fantastic coup.
“Gareth Bale is world-class, you don’t want to see players like that sitting on the bench, frustrated by not playing, you want to see these players live, playing again.”
ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT
When someone of Steven Gerrard’s stature is getting excited over Thiago, it is an indication of how good the player really is. Gerrard made over 700 appearances for Liverpool, captaining the club to a host of trophies, including the Champions League, and knows exactly what it takes to succeed on Merseyside. So, for him to be getting butterflies over the signing of Thiago is a positive sign that this could be a big move for the club in the transfer market.
Who better to reassure Liverpool fans over the signing than a player with the experience and prestige of Gerrard? Hopefully, Thiago will now be able to go an excite the fans with his performances on the pitch for Liverpool this season and in seasons to come. It remains unclear, however, if Thiago is able to make his debut for the club this weekend against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Gini Wijnaldum, Jordan Henderson and Naby Keita started in midfield as Liverpool beat Leeds 4-3 last weekend in the Premier League. Keita was given the lowest rating by WhoScored on the night, with a score of 6.74, behind Wijnaldum and Henderson. This suggests that Keita, if anyone, could be in-line to drop out if Klopp decides to hand Thiago a starting berth for his debut.
