Steve McClaren told Sky Sports that Joe Gomez is the epitome of a modern centre back and recalled watching him play for Charlton Athletic.
“Again, a modern-day centre-back,” McClaren told Sky Sports News (10/09/2019 10:55 am)
“I remember seeing him at Charlton when he was playing right-back. Wow! He could defend. One-on-one he never got beat.
“I always saw him as a right-back, but Klopp’s tried him at centre-back. Purely for the fact that the way Liverpool want to play and how England want to play also. On the front foot, in your opponents half, so you have to defend on the halfway line. Gomez is quick and he is intelligent. And he would be able to recover if he were to get exposed.”
While Joel Matip is currently ahead of him in the pecking order, there is no doubt that Gomez is one of the best defenders in the Premier League even if he’s not quite been the same since breaking his leg.
At just 22 years of age, he still has well over a decade to find himself and show the world how talented he is. For Klopp, it’s such a blessing to have Gomez and then Dejan Lovren as his backup central defenders with Matip and Virgil van Dijk currently the first choice partnership at the back.
With Champions League football returning next weekend, domestic cup competitions and the FIFA Club World Cup on the horizon, Gomez will get a chance soon.
