Spanish journalist Joaquin Maroto claims that he is shocked by the hype around Virgil van Dijk and that he will never match Sergio Ramos.
The Dutchman won the UEFA Player of the Year for the 2018/19 season last week, beating Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to the award and is now favourite to win the Balon d’Or.
His performance levels over the last year have been staggering and unseen from a defender for a long time as he guided his Liverpool side to the Champions League trophy.
Maroto writes: ‘Van Dijk yes, and Sergio Ramos no?’ I am shocked that half the world is claiming the Golden Ball for Van Dijk.
“This trophy has eluded Sergio Ramos, whose numbers the Liverpool defender cannot even dream of reaching.”
Of course, it is highly unlikely that van Dijk will win as many major honours as Ramos but that doesn’t mean the former Southampton skipper isn’t more talented than his Spanish counterpart.
His pace, strength, aerial ability and unparalleled positioning have quickly seen him become the best defender in the world and he is only just entering his prime which is great news for Liverpool.
