Sadio Mane has hailed Liverpool teammate Virgil van Dijk for his incredible impact since signing for the Reds for £75million in January, heralding the Dutchman as “one of the best defenders in the world”.

It’s easy to look at the the Premier League top goalscorers charts and choose between Mo Salah, Raheem Sterling and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and say that each has been at the very top of the division in terms of performances.

Yet, the likes of Virgil van Dijk aren’t revered as much purely for the fact that they don’t grab the headlines in the same way as prolific forwards.

Speaking about the impact van Dijk has made at Liverpool, Mane said: “It’s been a big, big impact. We’ve all seen it. Of course, at the time he signed people were thinking that the club had overpaid for Virgil.

“But since then everyone has forgotten about the fee because his form has been so good. He’s done such a great job for us back there. I am so happy to have him as a team-mate.

“He’s one of the leaders. You can see it in every single game. He has proved he’s one of the best defenders in the world.”
