Joel Matip says he remains open to a return to Germany one day, with “a lot of room for Schalke” still in his heart, according to African Football.

The Cameroonian centre-back joined Liverpool from the Bundesliga side in 2016 on a free transfer and helped them win the Champions League trophy just over a week ago.

And despite suggestions that he’s on the verge of signing a new deal at Anfield, the 27-year-old has not ruled out a return to Germany.

“In football, nothing is impossible,” Matip said.

“Currently I have [had] two years contract with the Reds. After initial difficulties and injuries, I feel comfortable in Liverpool now.

“There is still a lot of room for Schalke in my heart. That never stops.

“Accordingly, my worries about this club were very big. I try to watch every single game on TV. It can only get better for the new season.”

Matip has become a key player under Jurgen Klopp in recent months and Liverpool fans will hope to see him commit his future to the club this summer.
