Xherdan Shaqiri limped off the field in the Nations League third-place play-off against England yesterday, according to the Mirror.

The Swiss international was forced to leave the pitch in the second half of the game, which England went on to win on penalties.

Shaqiri signalled to the bench that he needed to come off after seeming to pull a muscle, heading immediately for the medical room.

Reds supporters will hope the 27-year-old hasn’t picked up a bad injury ahead of what will be an important pre-season for the player, who will look to place himself firmly in contention under Jurgen Klopp next season.

Shaqiri enjoyed a good first half to the 2018/19 Premier League campaign before dropping down the pecking order in the latter months of the title race, sparking rumours he could be sold during the transfer window.

However, the diminutive winger confirmed that he’s going nowhere this summer, stating: “The manager has many good options and has to decide who can play. I knew before my transfer that the competition here is very tough.

“I have a long-term contract and I definitely will stay.”
