Real Madrid have reportedly joined the race to land Liverpool central midfielder Gini Wijnaldum at the end of the season.

According to Corriere dello Sport, as transcribed by Mundo Deportivo, Real Madrid are now interested in signing the Dutchman and are willing to challenge Inter and Barcelona for his signature.

The report claims that Liverpool demanded €25m for Wijnaldum in the summer and Barcelona were unwilling to pay that price due to him being out of contract at the end of the 2020/21 campaign.

This latest news could play into an update that came out earlier this week regarding Wijnaldum. A report claimed that Liverpool have offered Wijnaldum a new contract with a 40% wage increase in an attempt to keep him at the club, amid interest from a number of sides.

So, Real Madrid coming in for him could have huge ramifications in those negotiations depending on certain variables. If Wijnaldum is keen on signing for the Spanish giants, it could be a huge blow for Liverpool as he now has the power to let his contract run down and then leave on a free. He could sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club in January, or wait until next summer and have his pick of teams.

On the other hand, Wijnaldum could use Real’s interest to ask for more money at Anfield. Even if he wants to stay at Liverpool, it could be a smart play for him to go to Liverpool and demand an extra 10-15% with the threat of joining Real if they do not comply. That is not to say it is what Wijnaldum will do, but it could be one of the options he has at his disposal in negotiations.
