Pundit Ruud Gullit believes that Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk had a poor game against Atletico Madrid last night.

Liverpool lost the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie against Atletico Madrid 1-0 at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.

Saul Niguez’s first-half strike ultimately gives the Spanish giants something to defend come the second leg at Anfield on March 11.

Van Dijk, who has been immense for Liverpool since joining the club in January 2018, arguably had one of his worst games in a red shirt.

Gullit picked up on that being the case when watching the game, and he certainly did not hold back when giving his opinion on the Dutchman after the match.

Speaking to beIN SPORTS, as quoted by the Mirror, Gullit said: “Van Dijk has had a nightmare today. I saw him doing things, especially the first ball how he gives away the corner, clumsy a little bit, not necessary to do that.

“A little bit of luck, ball comes in front of his foot and 1-0.”

Van Dijk did have an average game, but it would be his first in a long time. The Dutchman rarely plays poorly, which does make it a surprise when he does have an off game.

The result in the first leg will inspire him to have a better outing in the second leg, which should help ensure Liverpool progress beyond the last-16.
