PSG and Inter Milan have reportedly joined Barcelona in the race to sign Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum on a free transfer next summer.
According to 90min, as relayed by TeamTalk, Inter and PSG are both interested in landing Wijnaldum, who has been on Barcelona’s radar since the end of last season and Ronald Koeman’s appointment.
The report claims that Jurgen Klopp is also hoping to convince Wijnaldum to stay at the club and sign a new contract. His current deal expires at the end of the current campaign, meaning that he can sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club in January.
ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT
If Klopp is desperate to keep Wijnaldum at Anfield, Liverpool should be doing everything they can to make him extend his current deal with the club. Wijnaldum has shown again this season that he could be a very important player for Klopp, starting five of Liverpool’s six Premier League matches so far and coming off the bench in the other.
The Dutchman impressed in the 2-1 win over Sheffield United, recording a WhoScored rating of 6.98. He won two aerial battles, made a tackle, an interception, a block and two clearances, along with having a pass completion of 95.1%. This shows that he still has it in him to affect games in the Premier League for Liverpool and that he can have an impact going forward if Liverpool hand him an extension.
It could be down to what Wijnaldum wants to do with the end of his career and if he sees himself retiring at Liverpool. Instead, he could want to – for example – go to France and win a few titles with PSG and live in Paris in the final years of his playing career. The ball appears to be in Gini’s court and it will be very interesting to see which type of shot he goes for.
