Former Arsenal footballer Paul Merson believes that Liverpool deserve more respect than what they are currently getting.

The Reds are currently 14 points clear at the top of the Premier League table with a game in hand.

Liverpool have also only dropped points in one Premier League fixture this season, which was the 1-1 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford back in October.

In terms of silverware, Liverpool have won the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup in the past six months under Jurgen Klopp.

With the club achieving so much recently, Merson believes Liverpool deserve more credit than what they are currently getting.

“You watch them against Tottenham, they were 1-0 up and they still bomb forward, it’s in their make-up, and they can defend,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“When you can defend like that, you’re always going to dictate football matches.

“Why are Liverpool not favourites to win the Champions League? They’ve been at two straight finals. Manchester City haven’t even looked like winning it, and they are favourites.

“I don’t think Liverpool get the respect they should get; this is the best team in Europe by some distance.

“If you want to beat them, you need two or three goals. They don’t go to park the bus. I can only really see Man City beating them.”

It is a fair point Merson makes. Liverpool are the best team in the world right now, but there is a sense that many are refusing to accept that being the case.

If you scroll through social media, you will find people claiming Liverpool are where they are purely because ‘luck’ has been on their side.

That is very disrespectful. Perhaps winning the Premier League this season will see Liverpool get the deserve they respect?
