Journalist Fabrizio Romano has given an update on Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk.

Romano has stated that Liverpool will offer Van Dijk a new contract. Romano added that “negotiations will begin in the coming months”.

Van Dijk’s current contract expires in the summer of 2023.

Romano told CBS Sports: “Liverpool, on the other hand, are focused on the return of Virgil van Dijk. The board has plans to offer the Dutch defender the renewal of the contract, and the negotiations will begin in the coming months.”

The sooner Liverpool get this deal done, the better. We don’t believe that Van Dijk is planning on going anywhere.

The reality is, Van Dijk has won the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and Premier League title since signing for the club back in 2018.

As long as Liverpool are challenging for major honours, Van Dijk has no reason to depart.

But, it would bring us peace of mind knowing that Van Dijk’s contract is extended beyond the summer of 2023.

If no new deal is signed, Van Dijk could depart the club on a free transfer in the summer of 2023.

If Van Dijk signs a new deal, there is a fair possibility that he will finish his career at Anfield, as he is currently 29 years of age.
