Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has backed Liverpool to win the 2019-20 Champions League.

The Reds defeated Salzburg 2-0 on Tuesday night in Austria thanks to goals from Naby Keita and Mohamed Salah. The victory ensured Liverpool progressed to the knockout rounds of the Champions League.

The Reds have had plenty of success in Europe’s elite competition recently. The club have played in two consecutive Champions League finals under manager Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool lost the first final 3-1 against Real Madrid in Kiev in 2018, but the Reds defeated Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in Madrid come the second final in 2019.

Ferdinand believes the Reds will have more joy in this particular competition come the end of the season. He also added that it is likely Klopp’s side will claim the Premier League title.

“It’s a clean sweep for Liverpool, they just look the more complete team,” said Ferdinand on BT Sport.

“They’ve just got a mentality, once you win, they’ve been on the cusp of winning for a couple of years but they got over that line, they won the big one, the Champions League.

“They look like they’re going to win the Premier League now, I think they’ve just got a mentality now that they’re not going to lose.

“Before a ball’s even kicked: ‘We’re not going to lose this game, we’re going to win’.”

There is no denying that Liverpool have one eye on the Premier League title this season, but they certainly have the squad depth to mount a serious challenge in the Champions League.

The Reds amassed 97 points last season in the Premier League and still claimed the European Cup come June. They have already shown they have the capacity to challenge on both fronts, which means they should be looking to do it all again.

The draw for the round of 16 will take place on Monday. Liverpool will face one of Real Madrid, Atalanta, Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund or Lyon.
