Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has hit back at Piers Morgan after the TV personality took to Twitter to share his opinion on the status of the Dutchman.

Van Dijk, who finished second to Lionel Messi in the 2019 Ballon d’Or, was asked a question by a reporter at the ceremony regarding Cristiano Ronaldo and if he were a rival for the prestigious individual award.

The Dutchman decided to make a tongue-in-cheek comment, asking the reporter if Ronaldo “was really a rival” for the 2019 Ballon d’Or, as the Juventus forward was not in attendance.

Morgan could not resist and decided to hit back claiming Van Dijk is not in the same league as the Portuguese superstar.

Van Dijk responded to Morgan on Twitter saying: “Hi Piers, If you don’t jump on the social media bandwagon and would listen to the whole interview then you would know I made a joke, and only got respect for those 2.”
