Liverpool are reportedly one of a number of clubs pushing to sign Villarreal winger Samu Chukwueze ahead of the January transfer window.
The report claims, however, that Villarreal value Chukweuze at €80m and that his price is currently causing negotiations to stall with the Premier League sides.
ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT
This seems to be an unnecessary target for Liverpool given the players that they already have at their disposal. Chukwueze predominantly plays on the right side of the attack, where the likes of Diogo Jota, Mo Salah and Xherdan Shaqiri can operate for Liverpool. Is he better than any of them? His statistics for Villarreal would suggest not, given that he has four goals and three assists in his last 25 starts in La Liga.
Jota has eight goals in six starts this season, so – immediately – Chukwueze does not appear to be as good as the Portuguese forward. Salah, of course, also has far more impressive goalscoring stats as he has 27 league goals since the start of last season and Shaqiri has seven goals and three assists in his last 13 starts for the Reds, showing that he also has more to offer in the final third.
This shows that Liverpool do not need to spend €80m, or any amount, on Chukwueze, as they already have better options in their squad. Jota, Salah and Shaqiri are all posting better numbers in an attacking sense and are all under the age of 30 – meaning that a swift decline is unlikely whilst they are still in the primes of their careers.
