Liverpool are reportedly interested in both Ibrahima Konate and Dayot Upamecano ahead of the January transfer window as they consider bolstering their defensive options.

According to Bild journalist Christian Falk, Konate and Upamecano are both on Liverpool’s transfer list as Jurgen Klopp eyes the RB Leipzig duo.

Liverpool have been linked with Upamecano already in recent months, but it now appears as though they are also keen on his centre-back partner – Konate.

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

Looking at the two centre- backs on paper, it is strange to see Liverpool being interested in Konate and Upamecano. The latter appears to be the better option for a number of reasons, firstly being that his performances on the pitch have been better in recent seasons. Since the start of the 2019/20 season, Upamecano has recorded higher average WhoScored ratings in both the Bundesliga and Champions League for Leipzig, suggesting that he has been able to perform to a higher level than his compatriot and teammate.

Secondly, Konate’s list of injuries in recent seasons is incredibly worrying. Since 2017, Konate has picked up seven injuries and missed 37 games for Leipzig across all competitions. This is a concern for Liverpool given that they are looking at a centre-back to cover for the injured Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk – with both of them poised to miss the majority of the campaign.

So, it could make more sense for Liverpool to focus their efforts on trying to sign Upamecano if they are set on signing one of the pair. He is more consistent with his availability and injury record and has been able to record higher-rated performances when he has been able to play compared to Konate.
