Liverpool are reportedly facing competition from Bayern Munich, Manchester United and Manchester City for the signature of RB Leipzig centre-back Dayot Upamecano.
The report does state, however, that Bayern could find it difficult to bring Upamecano in if they are unable to resolve David Alaba’s contract situation at the club, with the centre-back out of contract at the end of the season.
ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT
This could be an intriguing transfer saga to follow with four huge clubs involved in the race. With Bayern yet to sort out their Alaba conundrum, the three Premier League sides – including Liverpool of course – could have the upper hand in the January window. It could give Liverpool a boost in their pursuit of the Frenchman if they go in for him whilst Bayern are still sorting out their own issues, allowing them to steal a march on the German side and agree a deal with Leipzig first.
However, the same goes for United and City, who could also challenge for Upamecano in January. The report does not state who has the most serious interest as of yet, but does say that City could be reluctant to spend big after signing Nathan Ake and Ruben Dias last summer. This means that it could be down to Liverpool and United if Leipzig demand a hefty figure for his services.
Liverpool have shown in the past that they are willing to spend big in January if the right player comes along. They spent a reported £75m on Virgil van Dijk from Southampton in 2018 and Upamecano could tread a similar path in just over a month’s time if the Reds decide to bring him in.
