Liverpool are reportedly interested in Sporting Lisbon youngster Nuno Mendes, though contract negotiations could ward off the Reds.

The Reds are naturally always on the look out for good young talent coming through and, according to Portuguese outlet A Bola – via Sport Witness, Mendes is one on their watchlist.

The 18-year-old operates on the left of the pitch and can play either full-back or sometimes in midfield, with him making 8 appearances so far this season for Sporting in the Portuguese top flight.

It sounds as though he has caught the Reds’ attention in those matches, then, but it’s not a foregone conclusion that the club will manage to sign him.

According to the report, the Reds are lurking at the moment and may look to strike but Sporting are aiming to offer him a new deal soon to ward off interest – with him only signing a contract back in the summer.

Indeed, if they do ink a deal and Sporting increase his release clause above its current figure of €45m, it’s claimed the Reds would then cool their interest in him.

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

This could be one to watch.

Mendes is a good young player and it would seem Sporting are all too aware of that and the potential of losing him.

He’s recently signed a new long-term deal with the club but they already want to re-write the terms and increase the release clause in his current agreement.

If they are successful in doing so, that will apparently stop the Reds in their tracks.
