Liverpool have been drawn in Group D of the Champions League and will face Ajax, Atalanta and FC Midtjylland to compete for a place in the knockout stages of the competition later in the year.
Ajax and Liverpool last faced each other competitively in 1966, according to James Pearce of The Athletic, so it will be interesting to see how the two clubs fare against each other in the competition.
Atalanta finished third in the Serie A behind Inter and Juventus last season, scoring an incredible 98 league goals in the process. They made the quarter-finals of the Champions League, losing to PSG – who went on to lose in the final to Bayern Munich.
Completing the group is FC Midtjylland, who were knocked out of the Europa League last season by Rangers. They are now getting their chance to compete at the top and could be highly motivated for their game against Liverpool due to this being their return to the Champions League.
The Reds were knocked out by Spanish side Atletico Madrid in the round of 16 in the Champions League last season. Atletico won 1-0 at home before traveling to Anfield and winning 3-2 in the last game to have fans in the stadium on Merseyside to date.
