Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson is reportedly set to be unavailable to face Leicester in the Premier League on Sunday due to injury.

According to Paul Joyce, of The Times, Liverpool are likely to be without Henderson when they line up against Leicester at Anfield.

Henderson was forced off at half-time during England’s 2-0 defeat to Belgium last weekend, with the central midfielder returning to Liverpool earlier this week for treatment.

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

This comes as a surprise after a report on Wednesday that Liverpool were optimistic about Henderson’s chances of being able to play against Leicester. It could be that they had hope earlier in the week that he would be able to pass a fitness test, only for them to find out in the last 24 hours that it was not going to be the case.

With Henderson out, Jurgen Klopp has a big decision to make regarding who he plays in midfield. The article also mentions how Fabinho and Thiago are lacking fitness, which suggests that neither of them are in contention to start or, at least, play 90 minutes of football. This leaves Gini Wijnaldum, Curtis Jones, Naby Keita and James Milner as the central midfield options.

Wijnaldum has started seven of the eight league matches this season, so he could take the first spot in the midfield three – if Klopp lines up with that formation. With Leicester currently top of the Premier League table, experience could be key for the Reds as the Foxes are full of confidence and a young player – like Jones – could get caught out by the occasion. This means that Keita and Milner could be the safe selection alongside Wijnaldum to help Liverpool through the game as Fabinho, Thiago and Henderson all reecover.
