Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is reportedly keen to push through a deal to sign Ousmane Dembele on loan from Barcelona before the end of the window.

According to Spanish outlet Sport, Liverpool have contacted Barcelona over a potential loan deal, as Klopp believes he could improve his attacking options.

The report does claim, however, that Barcelona will not be willing to let the winger leave if it is only on loan. It remains unclear as to whether or not Liverpool would consider a permanent transfer for the Frenchman.

Is Dembele worth Liverpool attempting to sign on a permanent deal? His performances since arriving in Spain suggest not. In three years at Barcelona, he has produced 12 goals and 11 assists in La Liga, whilst both Mo Salah and Sadio Mane were able to directly contribute to more goals than that individually in just the 2019/20 campaign.

This suggests that Dembele would not be an improvement on Liverpool’s current wide options or provide them with enough competition to really push them to improve. Dembele only made five appearances in La Liga in the 2019/20 season, scoring once, and appears to have struggled to get into the Barcelona side, whether that be by selection or injuries.

Due to this, Liverpool may be better off going in search of alternative targets to Dembele where they could find more value for their money. However, if Barcelona changed their mind and he was available on loan, it could be worth a risk to see if Klopp can get the best out of the French international. Then, if he does fail to produce then Liverpool can send him back to Barcelona at the end of the season with little damage done to themselves.
