Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has been ruled out of the club’s clash with Arsenal at Anfield in the Premier League on Monday.

Henderson, and Joel Matip, will miss the game through injury after also sitting out for Liverpool’s 7-2 win over Lincoln in the League Cup on Thursday night. The midfielder came off at half-time during Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Chelsea last weekend, with new signing Thiago Alcantara replacing him for the second half.

The Athletic’s James Pearce has confirmed the news, whilst also revealing that Joe Gomez and Billy Koumetio are back in training.

With Henderson out, Jurgen Klopp could be forced into handing Thiago his full debut for the club and his first appearance at Anfield since arriving from Bayern Munich. Despite giving away a – albeit soft – penalty against Chelsea, Thiago showed some promising signs of what he can offer in a Liverpool shirt at Stamford Bridge.

In just 45 minutes on the pitch, Thiago attempted an impressive 82 passes with a success rate of 90.2%, along with making a tackle and an interception. This highlights how much Thiago wants to get on the ball and dictate the play, dragging opposition teams across the pitch to follow the ball in order to find an opening. The Spaniard could help Liverpool cut open deep blocks and find gaps in well-drilled defences in the Premier League.

However, he has some huge shoes to fill in the side. Henderson was a key part of Liverpool’s Premier League success last season as he captained the side to the title, recording a WhoScored rating of 7.15 across his 31 league appearances. This shows the consistently high level he was able to achieve on the pitch and Thiago is going to need to step up and prove that he is capable of taking on that mantle.
