Jurgen Klopp is hopeful that centre-back Joel Matip will be fit to feature against Crystal Palace in Liverpool’s first away trip of the Premier League season on Monday night.

Matip sustained an injury during pre-season and has been slowly recovering, but Klopp believes there is a chance that he could return to the squad against Crystal Palace. Dejan Lovren on the other hand has not trained this week which rules him out.

With there being a number of central defenders unavailable at the minute, Joe Gomez stood up against West Ham United last weekend, and Klopp was full of praise for the Englishman.

“I was never in doubt about his ability to play centre half, but he needed time after his injury,” said Klopp.

“Playing full back will help him, but now he’s fit and a very good footballer. With VVD he had a very good understanding, which is really cool.”

Klopp believes the trip to Selhurst Park on Monday night will prove to be a challenge for his side.

“Monday night, fantastic atmosphere there, they are full of confidence too and we need to ensure we are ready,” said Klopp.

“We need to stay positive, we also need to stay angry.”
