Liverpool will not allow centre-back Joel Matip to leave the club right now, according to journalist Paul Gorst.

Matip has recently been linked with Paris Saint-Germain. However, Gorst has made it clear that Matip will not be sold anytime soon.

Gorst told the Liverpool Echo: “No. Liverpool won’t allow Matip to leave right now.

“The club only have three senior centre-backs and losing him would leave them with just VVD and Gomez.

“It’s a non-starter. Matip was injured a lot last season but he is a good centre-back when fit and ready.”

This does not come as a surprise to us. Klopp clearly likes Matip. He signed the centre-back from Schalke on a free transfer back in 2016.

Matip has proven to be a bargain, as he has made 111 appearances for the club.

It was not that long ago that Klopp labelled Matip as “world-class”, which does provide an insight into how the German views the Cameroon international.

Matip only made 13 appearances for the Reds last season, but he was good when he played. Matip finished the season with an overall player rating of 7.17.

Matip is also still only 28 years of age. His career is certainly far from over. It would make no sense at all to sell Matip, as he arguably still has plenty of football ahead of him.
