Darren Bent told Football Insider that he thinks Gareth Southgate is making a mistake not starting Joe Gomez and that the Liverpool star is England’s best defender.
The former Charlton Athletic defender is second choice to Joel Matip at Anfield after he spent much of last season on the sidelines due to a broken leg he suffered at Turf Moor in December 2018.
His pace, strength and ball-playing ability make him one of the best defenders in England and arguably the best option available to Gareth Southgate yet he is playing second fiddle to the likes of Harry Maguire.
Speaking to Football Insider, Darren Bent said: “Yeah, there’s a few – obviously he got the nod, him and Maguire. You’ve got John Stones, Tyrone Mings was on the bench, Tarkowski wasn’t in the squad.
“At the moment England seem to be really strong in certain areas. There’s another one I forgot about, Gomez at Liverpool, who should be starting. I think he’s their best defender; strong, powerful.”
Gomez not starting for Liverpool will be a factor in his lack of game time for the Three Lions but from a biased perspective, it’s good news for Jurgen Klopp because it means he has at least one more player not being exposed to the risks of getting injured on international duty.
The international break is the most frustrating period of the year for fans because it means a couple of weeks without Premier League football and it’s even worse when a star player returns with an injury.
